We had our first 'Bag The Bruck’ session a couple of days ago at Borwick Beach, our regular spot here on the West mainland of Orkney. It's a beautiful wild stoney beach ever changing with the light and tides and it was lovely to see so many fulmars back on the cliffs.
I’m generally quite hopeful and optimistic about the future of our planet, in spite of all the challenges we face but this particular beach clean up felt to be a bit of a reality check. Far more plastic and fishing debris than we’ve ever come across before and in the end we did what we could but plan to go back for a more serious focused effort soon. One of the hardest things was finding hundreds of tiny balls of polystyrene all mixed up in the seaweed and in amongst the stones and virtually impossible to clean up with out hours of patient work.
Every small step makes a difference though so like growing numbers of others we will keep beach cleaning, working at finding more ways to reduce the use of plastic in our every day lives, and remain hopeful for a brighter future for all.
